Eye Trauma

What is eye trauma?

Eye trauma is sudden damage to your eyes, and as many as 20% of American adults experience it at some point.  It can occur in many different ways, but some of the most common causes of eye trauma are:

  • Flying objects
  • Punches
  • Collisions
  • Explosions
  • Chemical splashes
  • Trips and falls
  • BB gun injuries
  • Object embedded in your eye

All types of eye trauma can be serious, so it's important to immediately assess your symptoms and contact Eyecare MPLS for help as soon as you experience any kind of injury to the area.

What are the symptoms of eye trauma?

Most eye trauma causes serious pain, and you may also experience other symptoms, including:

  • Inability to move your eye
  • Bloody eye
  • Corneal laceration
  • Dilated pupil
  • Change in your eye’s iris
  • Protruding eye
  • Floaters in your visual field
  • Flashes of light
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

You may also experience changes in your vision.

What should I do if I am hit in the eye?

If you're hit in the eye by a flying object or anything else, reach out to Eyecare MPLS right away. In the meantime, you can apply a cold compress to help with pain and swelling. Hold the compress very lightly to your eye, never applying any pressure.

If anything got lodged in your eye during impact, don't try to remove it on your own. Removing an embedded object of any size or type is a complex surgical procedure that only a skilled ophthalmologist like Dr. Hennen can perform.

What if eye trauma is untreated?

Untreated eye trauma can lead to eye diseases like glaucoma (traumatic glaucoma) and cataracts (traumatic cataracts). Sometimes, these diseases can appear long after the original eye injury, which is one reason why it’s so important to get checked out immediately, even when the injury doesn’t initially appear severe.

You could also suffer severe eye damage like retinal detachment. Ultimately, untreated eye trauma could lead to partial or total vision loss.

Dr. Hennen is a leading eye surgeon who can perform all necessary corrections to keep your eyes healthy. The sooner you get eye care, the easier the eye repair can be. Delaying care can introduce significant complications, so don’t wait.
